Defecation of the Nation

Fattened pigs
Eating swill
Hold them down
Make them get their fill
Bulging eyes
Sagging cheeks
Funnel trash
Into their beaks

They say destruction
Also breeds creation
But our generation
Is eating the defecation of the nation

Slice them up
Peel the flesh
Shrink wrap and
Clinicise their death
Powdered bone
Bloody gruel
Reclaimed meat
Sell it on as food

They say destruction
Also breeds creation
But our generation
Is eating the defecation of the nation

Prime cuts
To the rich
All that's left
Is this shit
Pretty box
Make it neat
Funnel trash
into their beaks

They say destruction
Also breeds creation
But our generation
Is eating the defecation of the nation

Lap it up
That's right
You'll eat it
If we tell you that it tastes nice

Lap it up
That's right
You'll eat it
If we tell you that it tastes nice

Lap it up
That's right
You'll eat it
If we tell you that it tastes nice

Lap it up
That's right
You'll eat it
If we tell you that it tastes nice

Grindstone

I got my nose to the grindstone every day
And I'm grinding so hard I grind my face away
I leave blood on the floor wherever I go
And if I grind much more I'll be grinding bone

Oh running so hard to stay on my feet
And when I run I run to someone else's beat
When my body runs down to a slower pace
They'll throw me out and find someone to put in my place

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive
Burn alive
Burn alive

Selling my soul just to have a home
Selling my home for another loan
Beat up, smacked down, left out in the cold
Rather get fucked up than do what I'm told

Pushing so hard on a giant weight
Feel like it's just me against the state
They've got a wooden box made just for me
To lie down in for eternity

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive

I get blood on my hands when I use my phone
I get blood in my eyes when the TV's on
I get blood in my mouth when I start to eat
Nothing left of me but rotten meat

I get blood on my hands when I use my phone
I get blood in my eyes when the TV's on
I get blood in my mouth when I start to eat
Nothing left of me but rotten meat

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive

No escape for you this time
Set the world on fire tonight
Nowhere else to run or hide
Everybody's gonna burn alive
Burn alive
Burn alive
Burn alive

We're all Going to Hell

One of the most recent Hearse Pileup songs - thought I might start posting up some of my lyrics.

Brixton's on fire
And the heat's started to spread
So let's get out the water canon
To blind people from the dead

Tottenham's on fire
Hate has burst into our streets
A seething wave of fury
Is building up around our feet

Either the rapture didn't happen
Or we're all going to hell
Put your hands over your nose
Try to ignore that burning smell

London's on fire
Homes are turning into ash
Forget about your wealth
Because the banks are our of cash

England's on fire
We'll engulf ourselves in flame
We'll turn upon ourselves
When we have no-one left to blame

Either the rapture didn't happen
Or we're all going to hell
Put your hands over your nose
Try to ignore that burning smell

In other news, our new website is up, you can see it here

Also, we have a gig on Tuesday, come down if you fancy hearing what it really sounds like.

We have a live album up on Bandcamp too for free download right now, so go check that out too.

Finally, I've also set up our newsletter, which you can sign up for here.

Plan B's Ill Manors; Wake Up, Get Angry.

I didn't know much about Plan B until I heard the above song - I was more likely to have associated it with a local nightclub in Bixton.

I happen to think it's the best thing that's happened to modern popular music in a long time. It shits all over materialistic wank that seems to stem from a lot of (popular) rap and hip-hop. It deals with class interaction, politics, and the way a whole swath of the British populace is being victimized and forgotten about. Or worse, misunderstood and hated.

Obviously it is highly controversial; "How can you support the London riots?!" "Why can't you all go work as slaves at poundland and get off the streets?!"

What I find disturbing about it all is firstly the conservative party's general lack of understanding or care for these people who turn to this kind of activity because they were judged and sentenced the moment they were born. Secondly is the labeling by those in positions of power of the lower classes.

Violent. Uneducated. Lazy. Parasitic. Yobs.

David Cameron overtly pursued a course of action that fought fire with fire. This isn't the action of someone who'd like to 'hug a Goldie's, in classic Eaton drivel. This is the action of someone who wants to make an enemy of the people.

I can think of another group of society that were rounded up and demonised; the Jews under the governing of the Nazi party. During a recession no less.

A melodramatic comparison? Probably. But it is one that makes my skin crawl nonetheless.

But underlying all of this, as the Guardian quite eloquently pointed out, is why the riots happened. For a few short days a forgotten minority of the population got to feel like they had power the only way they could: by rampaging through the streets in angry mobs, and it was terrible, and caused them more harm than good. But I can understand why they did it.

You see, modern democratic process allows us the illusion of choice, it pacifies many. When you sit back and think about it, we are as helpless and without hope as those on the estates, on a global scale. Hell, I'd go and riot too to help create a sense of panic, just to feel like I could get a reaction.

Someone got jailed for TALKING about organizing a riot, on facebook, is that not more than slightly wrong?

Things are not 'ok', locally or globally. And it's something people need to be more aware of on a global scale.

Music is a medium that communicates with all levels of society on an unparralelled level, I applaud Plan B's major contribution to this kind of political communication - a long standing tradition. I hope more comes. Fast.

Coldplay stole my idea!

Funny how my last post was about copyright and fair use

Quite a lot of correlation, right?

I'm going to blow off some steam for a bit, then I might bost something new and exciting.

Shirobon/Chiptune/8-bit

I encountered this song when one of those unsolicited e-mail newsletters I'd been signed up to sent me an update exclusively about chiptune artists. I can't goddamn get it out of my head!

Shirobon, apparently he's pretty good.

Good music video too.

Whilst on the subject of chiptunes, check out the soundtrack to Tower of Heaven (and goddamn play it too!)

And likewise for VVVVVV

Happy Rapture Day!

Well I'm still here, which means either the rapture didn't happen, or we're all going to hell...

There's been some pretty cool stuff going on, I won the bloggie competition!

The judge was Ian Nathan, Editor of Empire Magazine, who I met on Friday. It was a really lovely day and I also met the person who wrote my brief and also won a cash prize - she's six months pregnant and I'm really happy for her!

Here's what Ian had to say about the film:

“It was impossible not to be persuaded by the sly humour, easy visuals, and note of poignancy in Matt’s feature. Dare I say, there is a touch of David Lynch in his natural strangeness — this tired figure (well performed) trapped in the monotony of life who finds release dressed as a yolk-yellow chick (a homage to Tweetie Pie?) and dancing like a madman amongst the grey clutter of Trafalgar Square. A song to the lunatic in us all.”

I was really touched - especially about the Lynch thing! It was amazing to be compared to David Lynch even in the slightet passing manner!

Hearse Pileup is also doing well - we've got another gig coming up tomorrow, £2 admission, and we're also looking at doing some recording soon!

Finally, we gave a talk today at OpenTech, a conference held at ULU, on behalf of Sukey today, here's a recording of the Ustream:

That's all for now, have a great rapture!

HearsePileup.co.uk now active!

Pretty happy with the result really, me and Sam cobbled it together whilst out here in Snowdon! The next gig is on the 11th of May, so make sure you come, I hope to see you there!

You might have noticed the text at the bottom of the site mentioning that 'Hearsepileup.co.uk is an open source website, with its code released on github.com'. I'll be posting about github soon, suffice to say that it is awesome, and with a short afternoon mucking about with the software, you could easily have access to source code for the website, and request me to pull your suggested changes to the code. In fact I truly hope you do - I'm falling in love with open source!

We need a new name for 'Contemporary Urban'

I saw this the other day and it got me thinking.

By no means do I think Rihanna is a rockstar, I think that the whole idea is pretty ridiculous. What interested me more is that Rihanna is seen as an 'R&B', or 'Contemporary Urban' artist. 'Contemporary Urban' is a pretty wishy-washy title. I mean technically I write contemporary urban music - I grew up in the city and it's written in the modern day.The fact it's such a terrible phrase reflects the fact that people prefer the term 'R&B'.

So, Rihanna is an R&B artist then? Well, I'm not sure the phrase 'R&B' is appropriate either.

Little Richard is seen as being a pretty good example of Rhythm and Blues from the 1950's. I won't bore you with loads of details, but essentially rhythm and blues was heavily based on the blues, which originated from black culture around the turn of the 1900's. This eventually turned into rock and roll.

So, what does the modern usage of 'R&B' have to do with rock and roll? Not a lot really...

A highly different musical style, typically using techniques such as sampling and mixing to produce backing tracks and beats. The history of 'contemporary urban' lies somewhere between disco, funk, and rap music - genres that defined the end of rock and roll really.

I think an alternate, fairer name form this genre of music needs to be found. I'm thinking of starting research for a text entitled

'Erasing Musical History with Linguistics'

Any ideas for an alternate name? Maybe you think I'm looking at this from the wrong way - there's certainly an argument in favour of the fact that R&B was a term originally created by music producers as a replacement for the offensive term 'race music', and that R&B still summarises a genre of music typically dominated by black artists. I'd be interested to hear some opinions!

I haven't started my research properly yet - so the content of this article should not be seen as an example of definitive positions, just posturing and conjecture to instigate discussion.

On the 22nd of May Hearse Pileup are going to be at the Hob in Forest Hill to kick ass and chew bubble-gum. And we're all out of gum.

HEARSE PILEUP GIG IMMINENT!

We had a really good practice at Borough studios on Saturday - really lovely facilities, staff, and all for £10 an hour - equipment hire inclusive! We also managed to get these pretty rough recordings. I don't think they're quite as good quality as our last recording of Last Time - but I think that's because it's a louder room and was bullying the mic too much. Having said that they give you a good idea of what we're about.

Excuse the sound coming in and out - the mic on the Bloggie I got given from dare is in a position which makes it really easy to put your finger over.

We've now got a 7 song set list together which comprises;

Overworked
Last Time
Taking a chance (Old TDM song)
Crazy Bitch (Song by our drummer Wojtek - originally for his one-man band Electrocock)
Avon (QOTSA cover)
Generation Y
Pretty Shiny Things

We should have the full list ready to gig by the end of the week. We're meeting with a friend at the end of the week to discuss gig possibilities and maybe a future recording session. I'm getting really excited - watch this space!

Hearse Pileup: New Recording of Last Time

Just A quick preview of the progress we're making really. We've got a recording session later this month coming up in which we plan of recording Pretty Shiny Things, Last Time and Overworked. Gigs to be announced soon - our set is nearly ready to go!

Lyrics:

Rhuemy eyed I wake
In an unfamiliar place
For goodness sake
I gotta find my way back home
It's much harder to do
When you're all alone

And this is the last time I get pissed
And this is the last time I get pissed
But only for a while

Drunk again tonight
Stuck in another hopeless hole
I'm not alright
I wanna smash my head on the wall
I know I shouldn't really be
Here at all

And this is the last time I get pissed
And this is the last time I get pissed
But only for a while

And this is the last time I get pissed
And this is the last time I get pissed
But only for a while

Excuse my silly dancing - I didn't even realise I was doing it!
